St. Charles School creates a world of learning that emphasizes development in the Catholic Faith, academic excellence, and diverse co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The way in which St. Charles School meets the individual needs of your child is unlike any other. Academic excellence continues in sixth grade, growing from all the work learned in previous years.

Curriculum

At St. Charles School, your sixth-grade student will receive superior academic instruction that touches the mind, body, and spirit.

  • In math, the focus is on helping students become fluent in math vocabulary and reflect on math patterns and processes through hands-on projects and cross-curricular activities.
  • In Reading, Students read a variety of fictional and nonfictional texts throughout the year that peak a variety of students’ interests. Our focus when reading the literature is to dissect each piece in order for students to think about the literature more critically. Many projects and activities foster student creativity and higher-level thinking. Also, in sixth grade, students acquire a lot of new vocabulary throughout the year with a Greek and Latin root word study.
  • 6th – In science, students study rocks, minerals, soils, cells, energy, and measurement.  A class favorite is frog dissection.  Students design and carry out an independent science experiment for the school science fair.
  • Sixth graders celebrate the arts by joining the band, show choir, and Mass music ministry, and creating art pieces for our art show.
  • Our weekly curriculum also includes art, music, computers, library, physical education, and Spanish.

Spanish

Spanish is taught twice a week with our sixth graders and every day for seventh and eighth-grade students.  In seventh and eighth combined, students may test out of Spanish One and move forward to Spanish Two in High School. Mrs. Sandra O’Gorman teaches Spanish to all students in grades Kindergarten through Eighth Grade.  To contact Mrs. O’Gorman, click here.

Catholic Faith

In sixth grade, students build on their knowledge of God through the study of the Old Testament. They have incredibly memorable lessons during “plague week” and prepare puppet shows for the younger students, demonstrating an understanding of the Bible. Each year we produce a living Way of the Cross for the parish. There are numerous service learning projects.

Seventh Grade

Curriculum

At St. Charles School, your seventh-grade student will receive superior academic instruction that touches the mind, body, and spirit.

    • In math, students use the latest technology to provide lifelong skills that will allow them to function well in an increasingly complex technological society. The rich curriculum offers the opportunity to work productively and reflectively.
    • In language arts, they are exposed to classic stories and evaluate them with a variety of critical-thinking skills. Because it is imperative in today’s society that young people be taught to recognize, evaluate, and understand the media messages that bombard us, students are taught to “read” media through media literacy lessons.
    • 7th – In science, students learn about cellular energy; ecosystems and biomes; work, power, and simple machines; waves; water, the atmosphere, and weather; and the periodic table and elements.  Many demonstrations and experiments help students to understand the content.  Additionally, students carry out an independent science experiment for the school science fair.
    • Spanish 1 instruction begins in seventh grade and enables students to increase their communication and thinking abilities, as well as the ability to fully appreciate and understand the world in which they live.
    • Our weekly curriculum also includes art, music, computers, library, physical education and Spanish.

Catholic Faith

Religious education is foremost in the minds of all the teachers in grade seven. We want the children to develop a vital, personal relationship with God—to proclaim and live in accord with God’s message. We strive to nurture a positive sense of self-worth and a deepening awareness of our responsibility to serve. Our focus is to live our faith as disciples of Jesus.

Eighth Grade

Curriculum

  • At St. Charles School, your eighth-grade student will receive superior academic instruction that touches the mind, body, and spirit.
  • In math, students will explore higher-level math skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking. Students will study both pre-algebra and algebra. We incorporate technology weekly and explore real-world math daily.
  • 8th Reading/ELA: Students focus on dissecting fictional and nonfictional texts to unveil deeper meanings and study how the structure, syntax, and word choice impact the piece of literature. A variety of activities and projects foster student creativity and higher-level thinking. Students focus on the following types of writing in the eighth grade: expository and research-based writing, argumentative, and narrative writing.
  • 8th – In science, students study the Earth’s interior and plate tectonics; earthquakes and volcanoes; fossils and geologic time; evolution; genetics; and forces and motion.  Demonstrations and experiments provide hands-on learning, and students enjoy engineering design challenges.
  • Our weekly curriculum also includes art, music, computers, library, physical education, and Spanish.

Catholic Faith

Your child’s faith will grow throughout the total experience of every day. The students celebrate a year of Confirmation preparation incorporated into our parish program running through our vibrant youth ministry program. Also, eighth-grade students learn about morality and Church history. The year is blessed with weekly student-led Masses filled with wonderful worship and praise music. In addition, the students tour the seminary and actively learn and live the Beatitudes. Our 8th Graders also have the honor to be Eucharistic Ministers.
