LIBRARY UPDATE
Welcome Back,
The library has been a busy place getting ready for school to start. It was a pleasure to see your student in the library. At the end of last school year PTO generously allocated $1000 for new science themed books for the library. I was able to update and replace many areas of study. I also purchased some new series and newly published books. Those books were bought with money earned at the Book Fair.
Log in to the library online catalog to see what is new or what might interest your student. The log in is  https://acld.follettdestiny.com Students use the same password and username as IXL. Choose St. Charles School and check out over 1000 e-books or look at the physical books we have in the library.
Our fall Follett Book Fair is scheduled for 10/7/19 – 10/11/19. This year at least 80% of the books will be paperbacks. In a few weeks I will send out a sign up for volunteers. You must be Virtus trained to volunteer. I appreciate your support.
If you have any questions or concerns about the library, contact me at  mbrown@stcharleskettering.org
Happy Reading,

St. Charles welcomes Mr. Bigelow!
Junior High Science!
I am excited, and a bit nervous, for this year. I hope to make science fun and interesting – well, at the very least, not too boring anyway. I plan to do a demo or a lab each week to get you involved in the topic. We have a ton to cover as I am supposed to prepare you for ALL SCIENCES (read that in an awe inspiring dramatic tone). To save class time, I’ll post the traditional “Teacher Introduction” here and use it to start figuring out this Google Classroom thing.

I grew up on my family’s beef cattle farm in the middle of the Manistee National Forest. I had 280 acres plus the surrounding forest as my playground and my work. The nearest town was 20 miles away, and that’s where I went to school – Cadillac, Michigan. I graduated from Michigan State University with degrees in English and biology and a secondary education teaching certification. I moved back to the farm and taught 8th grade English in my old 8th grade English class – that was a bit surreal. I eventually moved to Columbus, Ohio to be with my then girlfriend, now wife, Kim; she was getting her Masters and Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering. I went through the testing and paperwork to get certified to teach in Ohio, then promptly started working as a technical writer for a biomechanical engineering company, Bertec Corporation. At the time, they were a small company so really any writing fell into my jurisdiction. I wrote grants, patents, product spec sheets, marketing material, product manuals, journal articles, and research papers. It was a real combination of my writing and science backgrounds. I did that for six years or so; in that time, we had moved to Dayton and had two daughters (Natalie and Hannah). I quit working when Natalie was sixth months old to be a stay-at-home dad. I have rocked that job for the last 7 years, but am now back to teaching full time – 15 years after I graduated college! I am re-certified by the state of Ohio to once again teach 6-12 science and English, and it is your dubious honor to be stuck with me.

We are excited to have Mr. Bigelow apart of our St. Charles staff!
