THE IMPORTANCE OF HAND WASHING!
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease and Control Prevention), keeping hands clean is one for the MOST important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. Many diseases and conditions are spread by NOT washing hands with SOAP and clean, running water.
Through the month of DEC, the school nurse spent time with students in grades TK-5th grade discussing the importance of hand washing. The discussion included:
  • Germs
  • When to wash hands &
  • How to wash hands
We placed an emphasis on how to wash hands using the Wash Your Hands! poster (see attached) and the product glo germ. Glo germ is a tool that uses pretend germs in powder form that can be seen under a black light. Students were able to see what their hands looked like full of "pretend" germs and then how their hands looked after washing. We really focused on step 3 in the poster; washing hands or scrubbing hands (without water) for 15-20 seconds. Running water is only used for step 1 (wet hands) and step 4 (rinse hands).
Please help us keep St. Charles School healthy this winter by reminding children frequently about the importance of hand washing with a focus on step 3.
Student were all given a poster to color and asked to take home to share.
