Dressing the Altar
What Do We Mean by Dressing the Altar?
and
Can My Family Do It, Too?
Dressing the altar happens at the beginning of the Preparation of the Gifts. Two couples, a family, or any group of four to five people will bring forward the altar cloth (the biggest cloth that covers the entire top of the altar – much like a tablecloth at home), corporal (the cloth on top of the altar cloth on which the bread and the wine are placed for consecration), and a purificator (a small cloth that is used to wipe the lip of the cup). The linens are placed and then unfolded on the altar, except for the purificator which remains folded. Explicit directions are on our website under Worship and then the tab for Dressing the Altar and also in hard copy in the black binder at the Gifts table near the doors to the worship space.
Beginning with Christmas Eve, we would like to have the altar dressed for every Mass of the Christmas Season – ending on the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, January 8th. If your family or group of friends would like to participate, please call Brenda Tibbits, Pastoral Associate at 434-6081 or email btibbits@stcharles-kettering.org.
