I. Opening Prayer
Sue Klosterman opened the meeting with a prayer at 6:17 p.m. in the Teacher’s Lounge.
II.Approval of Minutes
The September minutes were approved. Mike Carter motioned, Tim Azbill seconded.
III. Pastor’s Report
In two weeks we will be Twinning with the Indian Reservation in Nebraska. Father believes some positive things can come from this.
Our stewardship Program is underway. Three years ago this endeavor was very positive. We received a big jump in collections. We haven’t emphasized this stewardship program quite enough. Our parish is in pretty good shape in light of the economy. We should be pleased.
IV. Principal’s Report
Preschool: We are assembling a group to finalize ideas for the preschool. The immediate topics to develop include the daily schedule and handbook. Mrs. Collins is working on a list of current school families with preschool age children that we will be contacting immediately. We have also been in contact with St. Francis Parish for a list of prospective families.
IOWA Test of Basic Skills: Most of the testing has been accomplished and the answer sheets will be sent for scoring by the end of the week. Test results are expected back prior to November 11 and will be provided to parents after this date.
Parent Teacher Conferences: Sign up sheets for conference times were sent home on Wednesday, October 12. The office staff is currently creating a schedule of all conference times for November 9 and 10.
50th Anniversary Walk: The school’s annual Healthy Walk will be in commemoration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the parish. Students will walk the neighborhood after Mass on Tuesday, Oct. 18.
School Enrollment: We added a new second grade student this week, which brings our student population up to 427. This is an increase of 11 students from this time last year.
V. Old Business
Investigations are underway of using the PAC for dismissal rather than Walsh Hall to maximize the use and proximity of Alter’s parking lot and the lot between the church and school. Mr. Bogle would like to speak with Athletics regarding after school practices that are scheduled in the gym. A goal is to have a plan in place before Election Day.
We will be installing 2 cameras to help monitor activity on the playground.
Less than 70 families still owe their Family Fee.
VI. New Business
A general discussion took place regarding volunteerism at St. Charles. Two products might be helpful to have on hand:
1). A wish list of items people would like to have done or purchased for St. Charles
2). A master list of everyone who is interested in volunteering and what their interests and skills may be.
There are numerous opportunities for volunteering and people are interested in becoming involved. The parish is also a good source of volunteers for our school. Many people do not know of the opportunities and a master list with contact information would be helpful for all.
A survey for parents may be considered to find out what personal interests they have and what priorities that feel are important for St. Charles to address.
Projects for the scouts is another area for volunteerism.
VII. Liasion Reports:
a. Teacher’s Report – Teresa Sarmiento
The library is hosting its fall Scholastic Book Fair this week. It was decided that a donation of 10% of our profit will go to St. Matthew’s Catholic school in Joplin, Missouri which was destroyed by a tornado in May 2011.
Kindergarten is creating a book about Mass and is preparing themselves for their first All School Mass on November 1st. They are also exploring living and nonliving things and what the difference between the two is. The students are also being creative making Jack-O-Lanterns, ghosts, and posters for books.
This is the school library’s main source of funds for the purchase of new books and materials for the library. We will host a Spring Book Fair Mar. 11 – 16, 2012.
The second grade will begin learning about some of the leaders, presidents and inventors in the United States who have made a difference in others’ lives. We will learn about our national landmarks, patriotic symbols, and holiday that honor those who served for our country.
4th grade is continuing their health unit. We talked about the digestive system, and created out digestive system out of yarn. We also talked about healthy eating, and how fast food could be harmful to your health. We will finish up with talking about communicable and non-communicable diseases. After we finish health we will be working on the Science Expo. Everything will be done in class. Our focus is learning and using the scientific method.
In social studies we have learned about the pioneers. We made Johnnycakes last week in class. We are also learning about the Native American tribes of Ohio.
Math is a lot of review with subtraction concepts, addition and subtraction sentences, estimating and variables.
5th grade religion classes are making rosaries for the missionaries.
The fifth grade class learned many lessons about the Constitution, its Preamble, and the Bill of Rights at the Victoria Theater last week. The show was entitled My Dog Ate The Constitution.
Fifth graders have been learning about the French and English colonists in both Canada and Latin America in History, and have been studying about Natural Disasters in Science. They are completing their own weather newspapers this week.
Mr. Kevin Delecki, a librarian for the Dayton Metro Library system and a member of the Caldecott Award selection committee, spoke to the seventh grade this week about the way the best picture book illustrator of the year is chosen. Students used their skills of analysis and debate to hold a mock Caldecott selection, just one of the special activities during Teen Read Week.
Our junior high math classes are now using the www.ixl.com website to enhance our curriculum. The math concepts taught in class are able to be reinforced at home and in computer class. One benefit we are finding of the web based program is that the formatting of the questions and answers is consistent with the standardized tests we use. The feedback we are getting is specific to each class and child and thus is very helpful in our RTI process.
Science students in 6th grade are studying plants.
Students in 7th grade science are preparing posters that compare two of the largest earthquakes of the 20th century.
The 8th grade students have created brochures that make a periodic table of the elements. It is on display in the hallway.
The annual Outsiders’ Day is Friday, October 28.
